Disabled Shooters

Hello All

I received this report today from Clive Davies, the Disabled Shooters Representative on the Welsh Target Shooting Federation Ltd board. It details the successes of a Disabled Welsh Shooter at a recent competition held in Sussex.

This competition attracted shooters from various part of the UK and abroad, and its success has prompted further calls from Associations in South Africa and Australia to name but 2, in readiness for next years competition.

The report follows as I received it, along with a photo.

The shoot was held over the 15/17 October at Northall shooting ground Sussex, Twenty shooters took part coming from England, Finland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the competition consisted of sporting and ABT, the ground also put on some double trap and OSK.
Welsh Shooter Mathew Goodwin took the following places
Wed 15th - ABT ( First ) Sporting ( Second ) Aggregate - Winner
Fri 17th - ABT ( First )
Overall Aggregate Winner

The World head of Classification Mrs.Sally Hall attended the shoot and classified those eligible under exisiting rules and will be giving a report / presentation to the ISCD ( World Governing Body for disabled shooting ) in December and it is hoped that from this the sport of clay shooting will spread worldwide. Interest has been expressed for another competition with New Zealand and Australia also expressing an interest in competing.
I have attached a picture of Mathews many visits to the podium to receive a prize from the Mayor of Brighton.

Yours in Shooting
Clive Davies

May I add my congratulations and best wisshes to Mr Goodwin on his achievemetns at the competition.

CSF ED Gibraltar

Well folks, only 2 weeks to go until the CSF Competitions in Gibraltar at the end of this month. Rumour has it that Harry Murphy has lost all his hair through stress and hard work getting things organised.

This years Championships should be very competitive, as for the first time in many years we have 7 Teams competing in the Clay disciplines. Its a shame that England could not be represented, especially as they would be defending champions.

Iain MacGregor has worked relentlessly to get a Scottish Team to go and seeing that they are sharing the Hotel with the Welsh Team should make for some close close competition, perhaps even raising the Bar slightly so to speak. Their performance might be hampered though, as Andy Coull is taking a well earned rest.

This year also marks the inclusion of a Ladies competition and a Double Trap Competition as well as the usual rifle and pistol events. In all, 30 shooters are representing Wales at these games ably led as usual by Team Manager John Dallimore, ably accompanied this year by his assistant manager Bill Phelps.

May I take this opportunity of wishing each and every competitor at the Championships the best of luck, and that includes myself, a report and photos will no doubt be posted shortly after our return, victorious I hope.

OSK International 2008

Firstly, many congratulations to Team England on winning this year's OSK at Auchterhouse in Scotland over the past weekend and also to Team Scotland for putting up an incredible fight to gain runner up position, only 6 clays adrift, well done to all concerned.

Also high up in the thank you stakes are Mr and Mrs Christie, Drew and Emma, and the staff at Auchterhouse Country Sports. It was said many times during the Captains' speeches that there never is a problem at Auchterhouse, even if there is one, so once again, many thanks to you all for the welcome that everyone received at what can only be described as a first class venue.

Hi gun went to Trefor Jeffries with an excellent 95x100 closely followed by Drew Christie on 93x100. How he managed to shoot, sort out minor trap problems, keep the traps filled up and do all the other bits, I'll never know, but do it he certainly did. Third place went to another Scot, local lad Andy Coull with 92x100. Its a shame you couldn't stay for the banquet Andy, I would like to have had a wee dram with you, but there's always Southern Counties mate.

Mr Iain MacGregor, what can I say, slick organisation made for a faultlessly run event, nothing less than what was expected from a perfectionist. Thank you for the event and I was glad to be of assistance.

Emma Christie, you can now stop shaking whilst trying to write down the scores on the board, its over, time for a well earned rest before the next big 4 events over the next month or so.

Nicky Keene, what can I say, who amongst us would have the balls not to buy a raffle ticket? not me!! Well done girl, I believe you raised quite a few hundred pounds for the charity over the weekend, and also for leading the "D" Class at the Banquet (Drinking Class)

The Welsh Team finally finished 4th, uncharacteristic lowly performances by a few of the Team, myself included led to a lowly finishing position. Well done to Supervet Terry Griffiths on collecting his 2nd trophy in as many weeks, winning the Dragon Trophy as Welsh Hi Gun with 87x100, and to Jonathan Stepney in his 1st OSK Internationa, finishing in runner up spot with 83x100, a wonderful achievemnet considering he has only competed in the discipline for 10 months. This was a new trophy this year kindly designed, manufactured and donated by Roger Harrendence of Cross Engineering Ltd. Thanks Roger.

To the new caps in the Welsh Team, congratulations on achieving your position and well done on competing, same goes for all the new caps.

Team Wales had the ubiquitous pleasure of having a father and son competing, but Northern Ireland take the biscuit, not only did they have "Grandad" and Ricky Jermy but also Alec Buchanan and 2 of his sons, Grant and Thomson, and with Squinty coming through the ranks look out everyone. Well done boys.

And finally to next year, "Grandad" kindly invited us all to compete at the 2009 event in Northern Ireland, at a ground I consider quite special, The Route, a little club on the outskirts of Ballymoney, with a huge following and an even bigger welcome. With members like Richard Dowse, John Church, Roy Stewart and his boy, Kenny McCauley to name but a few (for those who dont know them, National Skeet shooters, the event is definitely going to be a resounding success and I for one am looking forward to it.

Thats all for now, pictures will be posted later, when I get them by email, and I will post asap.

Many thanks to all concerned, and I'll see you in Southern Counties.

Welsh OSK Grand Prix

Terence Frederick William Griffiths 2000 - 2008

Don't worry it's not his obituary, just the length of time its taken him to win the Grand Prix again, his move across to Superbikes might also have had something to do with it.
Anyway, the 2008 Welsh GP was held over the weekend of 2/3 August at a new venue for OSK shooters, Llandegla, near Wrexham in North Wales. It was to be a tricky start, with the ground calling in Promatic to service a trap and to fit new timers on the GP, just to ensure smooth running.
Llandegla is renowned for wind, a problem also suffered by a few shooters, and Saturday was no exception, however the jury did a fantastic job with setting the targets and shooting started promptly at 11am.
Early leaders were Steve Taylor and Lyn Davies, but both faltered in the second 50 to allow Griffiths, Jenkins and Stepney junior to close up and collect the lowest points for the day. Gary Brewer and Stepney senior were not far behind, just waiting for any mistakes on Sunday.
Sunday dawned with hardly any wind but the threat of rain hung in the skies. Early pace setter was Stepney senior who had reduced the deficit to 2 clays after the first 50, but Jenkins and Griffiths held on and all 3 finished joint hi guns on 89x100 for the day.
And so to the flash final, which comprised of Terry Griffiths, Paul Jenkins, Richard Stepney, Jonathan Stepney, Gary Brewer and a late charge by veteran Del Davies saw him clinch last place.
The final proved harder than both days put together, with every single shooter suffering for some reason, but still had a twist in the tail. Griffiths who had been leading going in to the final came out of it in joint place with Paul Jenkins, leaving father and son Richard and Jonathan Stepney to fight for the Bronze, won of course by Dad, with the narrowest of margins, 1 clay, better luck next time Slim!!
The GP winner had to be sorted, so it was a sudden death shoot off on peg 4 eventually won by Terry Griffiths.
The weekend was also the decider for the Welsh Home International team, with the top 8 places virtually decided, it was down to 6 shooters to fight for the last 4 places. Gary Brewer did enough on Saturday to secure his position, so Sunday was all important. Victorious in gaining their places, and indeed their 1st caps were Peter "Chips" Jenkins, Steve Taylor and Gareth James.
Many congratulations to all 3 for achieving their goal.
It would be remiss of me not to thank Llandegla SG, Darren Norman the new owner and Dave Hughes and his staff for the kind welcome to the venue.
I must also apologise to Mark, the landlord of the Goat Inn in Maerdy for doing a runner and forgetting to settle my bill on Saturday night. Anyone who knows me would immediately realise that I could never do a runner so it must have been a leisurley stroll. Anyway, local hero Huw Evans who did not make the skeet team this year as Mark constantly reminds him, has saved the day and paid the bill on my behalf. Wont see him till next year so he might have forgotten by then. Diolch yn fawr Huw, neis cael dy gwmni unwaith eto ac yn enwedig gweld TJ Cader wedu torri.
All that remains is to thank everyone for another good and close run season, welcome back Terry and see you all in the airport. Roll on Auchterhouse.

Wales National Squad

Following the final 125 selection on the weekend of 12/13 July, the top 5 shooters who will comprise the National Squad are as follows:

Julian Jeremy
Malcolm Allen
Terry Griffiths
Richard Stepney
Paul Jenkins

The highest ranked development shooter was Jonathan Stepney, who must be congratulated on his achievements after only 7 months shooting OSK, and because of his performance during the year he has been nominated for Talent Support from the Sports Council of Wales.

The National Squad will now be in place until the end of the next selection period in 2009, and the incumbent shooters will benefit from funding allocated to Coaching and International competition. Their first foray abroad will be the CSF ED mini games held in Gibraltar at the end of September.

Congratulations to all of them.

Meanwhile, the battle for places in the Home International still rages on, with the Welsh Grand Prix at Llandegla on the 2/3rd August counting as 2 selection shoots, the last few places are still up for grabs.

OSK Telpyn 14/15 June 2008

Telpyn S/G.
The weather again was with us at this selection shoot held at Telpyn S/G 14th & 15th of June.Sadly our numbers were down a little but this did not detract from the occasion.

With Jonathan Stepney showing improvement each week under his dads watchful eye it was going to be interesting to see the week ends progress.

Julian Jeremy again set the pace by going clear on his first round,Roger Harrendence evened things up a little by doing the same on his second round. But through all this it was plain to see that the consistency of Jonathan Stepney was going to win the day.Again, the same shooters were pushing each other very hard, with Julian Jeremy, Paul Jenkins, Terry Griffiths and Richard Stepney all in the frame for the second day.A change of fortune was to come to some as a few shooters lost there way a little on the start up of the second day. Most made the effort to come back, which was good to see just how well some of our shooters can really hold it together when things get tough.

The 6 man final was to be a brilliant demonstration of 6 of the best doing their best at Olympic Skeet, as five scored 23 with one on 22 at the last bird.

The end result being Jonathan Stepney 114,+22ex25 Julian Jeremy 110,+23ex25, Roger Harrendence 108 +23ex25, Terry Griffiths 108 +23ex25, Paul Jenkins 108 +23ex25, Richard Stepney 107 +23ex25.

All thanks to the canteen staff at Telpyn for keeping us fed and watered throughout the day.

It is all credit to Richard Stepney on the fine job he has done on his son Jonathan, given the right encouragement and opportunity this lad will go far, and I will always be proud to say that I was one of the first to see him in action.Well done Jonathan, but just keep at it as we are not far behind you.

On a closing note, the change to 125 targets over 2 days has been adopted by most of our shooters and is running well, it has also started to show benefits in scores. However it has had a few teething problems which we have had to address on the day. We are trying to become more organised each time we shoot and with the help of one of our new shooters Steve Taylor we seem to be at last a well organised bunch. With this in mind we would ask that ground owners show a little patience if on occasion there appears to be some confusion among the shooters regarding the days arrangements.

Roger Harrendence, for Olympic Skeet.

Note from the Web Master;

Many thanks Roger for the above report, you are the first to publish directly to the site. Hopefully pics will follow shortly.

Here's a photo of the winner.

Sorry!! forgot about this bit, many thanks must go to Steve Taylor of Aermech Ltd for once again sponsoring the hi gun prize with 250 cartridges, a valuable commodity these days. Hers,s a photo of Jonathan Stepney receiving his prize from Steve Taylor.

Many thanks also to Pete Baker of the Sign Box and Paul Williams for the photos.
Oh yes and one final bit, the part thats most important to me as a father. This was a very proud moment that I will remember and treasure for a long time to come, witnessing my son win a selection outright at the age of 22, having only shot the discipline for 6 months and after a 6 year layoff from shooting, the arguments you wouldn't believe, and the turning point was when his elder brother told him to listen, "the old man knows what he's on about". Unfortunately now, my expectations are even higher "JD"!!!!!!!!!! Well done son.

SW2000 Selection Shoot

In what can only be described as near perfect conditions, Sw2000 hosted the 3rd of this years OSK selection shoots, utilising the 125 format over 2 days and the 100 format over 1 day.

All in all 25 entries were taken and the shooting got under way by 11am Saturday morning, with a few welcome visitors from across the bridge, Pete Flowers, Danny Maidment and the now regulars at our competitions, "Fatty" Long, "Pablo" Mills and Nicky Brocklesby.

Stamping his authority early on was Julian Jeremy, continuing his fantastic performance from the previous shoot to post a 47ex 50, chased by Richard Stepney and a very much on form Gareth Wrentmore on 46ex50. The last round of the day saw "JJ" increase his lead slightly finishing on 71ex75, Wrentmore dropping off but Stepney still in contention on 68ex75.

Sunday dawned rather cloudy but still dry with hardly any wind, when "JJ" who had been sent to bed early the night before stormed out of the blocks with a perfect 25 followed by a 23 to finish the weekend on 119ex125, winning the shoot but more importantly gaining that all important MCS towards selection for the next Commonwealth Games in 2010. We must apologise here to the shooters following him onto peg 8 because the place erupted into cheer at his achievement.

Roger Harrendence and Terry Griffiths must also have gone to bed "unaccompanied" as they posted 45 and 47 respectively on Sunday to climb back up the leader board. Stepney dropping the the same birds on both rounds finally finishing 3rd behind "JJ" and Harrendence to make his first flash final, joined by griffiths, Jenkins and Flowers. To rub salt into the wounds he had already inflicted, Julian also won the the final by 1 clay with Stepney, Harrendence and Jenkins joint 2nd.

Many thanks to Mike and Margaret, Phill and the catering staff at SW2000 for the weekend, and again many congratulations to Julian Jeremy for the excellent performance over the weekend.

OSK Selection Shoot Telpyn 3/4 May 2008

Who said that you cant teach an old dog new tricks, well Terry Griffiths does not need to learn any. After a layoff of over 10 years, competing in the Superbikes (nutter) he now seems to have replaced his brain and made a welcomed comeback to the OSK fraternity.

In what turned out to be very dull and windy conditions Terry shot a solid 109 in the main competition, enough to get him into the final where he produced a 24 to take the O/A Hi Gun and the cartridge prize donated by Steve Taylor of Aermech Installations, cheers Stve.

Julian Jeremy however topped the points score over the 100 and 125 competitions with an excellent 90/100 and 113/125, another good weekend.

Another returnee to the fold is Roger Rees, who last shot in 1982, again scoring well in both competitions and making the final.

"At Last" was the shout heard from D range, "Chips" Jenkins held it together over both days to shoot a personal best of 103 and take the last place in the 6 man final along with Roger Harrendence and Del Davies. 5 of the 6 being eligible to shoot in the veterans class!!!

Many thanks to Rob and Shirley at Telpyn for putting up with us. The caravan now moves on to SW 2000 at the end of the month, with the GB shoot at East Yorks in between.

Here's a photo of the "oldest swinger in town" receiving his hi-gun prize from Steve Taylor, MD of Aermech.

Cyprus GP 2008

Congratulations to Malcolm allen on shooting an absolutely stunning 121 ex 125 in the Cyprus GP last weekend.

As a testament to the competition Malcolm was up against, his score was on the periphery of the 6 man final, a final which consisted of four 2007 World Cup Finalists, the World Champion and the ISSF Shooter of the Year.

Again well done Malcolm for some fantastic shooting.

On the Trap side of things, Mike Wixey shot a 119 ex 125 in the main competition and just missed out on the final in a sudden death shoot off for 6th place with past Olymic athlete Alipov.

Scott Morgan also performed excellently in the Junior Category with a 109 ex 125, just missing out on the MCS by 1 target.

Hopefully we can have some pictures from Jon Hall in the future to add to the report.

Well done and thanks to all who travelled and competed, and to Jon Hall for his sterling work as Section Coach/Team Manager.

Malta Centenary Report

OOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats all I can say, however we did bring back the Bronze medal.

Where do I start, firstly with the welcome that we received from the MSSF, Saviour Portelli, the members of staff at the ground and clubhouse and not forgetting the main man, "Lightning", our faithful mini bus driver who ferried us everywhere.

The weather was changeable, going from bright sunshine to overcast, but always with that piercing cold wind, which was creating some havoc with the targets.

Practice sessions got off to a good start, the background and the use of accoustic release systems really hard to get used to. Paul Jenkins suffered badly with this as his "call" is normally drawn out. This was cured by a change of call to a shrill "APP".

With 10 in their squad, it was no surprise that the Italians featured strongly in the results, but I was with them after 1 round, but with the fairies at the end!!!. It is a shame that Cyprus did not make the competition as they had originally planned, it would have been great to rub shoulders with the world champion Achilleos.
Hi Gun for Wales at the competition was Jonathan Stepney, a relative newcomer to Olympic Skeet, having only shot the discipline for 3 months, well done son!! you must be looking forward to your new Beretta.

Many thanks to our supporters who made the long journey, Val James, Mike Amodeo (Thanks for the poloshirts) and John Dallimore of the WTSF.

All competitiors were awarded with an engraved glass trophy as a memento of this auspicious occasion in the Federation's history.

The 6 man final included 4 Italians and 2 Maltese shooters. Ronco with a slim 1 point margin going into the final dropped a hi 8 whilst Di Bari cleared up nicely to win by 1 point. 5th Place Clive Farrugia, the 16 year old Maltese kept his cool and finished in Bronze medal position.

Final Team positions were Italy, Malta and Wales in that order.

Following the presentations everyone was treated to a Maltese Buffet kindly laid on by the MSSF. Following that, it was back to the Hotel to reflect on what could have been, some line dancing and "happy hour" where it was "BOGOF" time.

"Arrivaderchi Italia! (Pardon the spelling)

"Where did you get that hat"

"Are you sure I can shoot for Wales, Mr Dallimore, Sir!!"

As regards the OT Team, ably looked after by Jon Hall, they didn't fare very well either, a"dirty gold" (bronze) being their reward for a very hard shoot indeed. Howling wind and torrential rain putting paid to some very promising performances. Better luck next time.

Many thanks to all the other shooters who travelled with the main teams, and well done on some very good performances.

Malta Centenary Shoot Feb 1st to 11th 2008

Hello and welcome to Skeetscene 2008. I apologise for not having blogged some more last year, but time prevented me from doing so most of the time, so we have a lot of catching up to do.

Lets start with a "Get Well Soon" message to Roger Harrendence, currently recuperating after major surgery on his gammy leg. Hurry up and get better Rog, not that we want you back on the scene, but my cartridge sales are down.

Anyway, the first big competition of 2008 is upon us, the Centenary Celebration of the Maltese Shooting Federation. Best of luck to both the Olympic Skeet Team of Del Davies, Myself and Paul Jenkins, accompanied by Jonathan Stepney and Terry Griffiths, and the OT Team of Nick Lyons, Jon Davies, Scott Morgan accompanied by Gwyn Davies, Roland Hill, Goose, Chris Belcher and Jon Hall.

Many thanks to Mike Amodeo of SW2000 Shooting Ground for the polo shirts to commemorate the occasion and for joining us on the tour, and to the WTSF, in particular John Dallimore for their financial support.
